If we compare to the world of crude oil the increases that 2022 sees for the price of gas and electricity, it would be as if oil shot up to $300 a barrel.
Compared to the last 15 years, gas is now bought for 10 times more, with repercussions on methane and electricity bills. If the situation persists, Italy would have to spend EUR 100 billion more in one year.
We need a structural change, one that reduces consumption and, consequently, methane imports. The solution we have at hand is to produce energy ourselves, to accelerate on renewables.
If instead of producing 35% renewable energy, at least 65% was produced today, the impact on the energy bill would have been less than half.
At this stage we should simultaneously increase energy efficiency in buildings and rapidly accelerate on clean energy.
